I generally try to stay away from the whole class conflict thing, but this really bothers me. It makes me think of how much bullshit the whole “trickle down” economy really is. There is money above that can be used to improve the quality of life many Americans lack. We live in an economy driven by consumption of goods and services. We can’t consume unless we have money to be spent.
The other day I caught a split second of a documentary about how evil Walmart is. What got to me, was when the CEO said that he never has bad news to give at his annual investors meeting. “Profits are record breaking. Every year we make more than we did the last.” But then I’m wondering, why aren’t his employees getting paid more? Its next to impossible to make a living on minimum wage. If you work full time on minimum wage, you qualify for public aid. How sad is that? If I were still in the Army and an E5 with a wife and two kids, we would qualify for WIC.
At my last job, my boss had everyone read this article stating that employees aren’t motivated by wages. At all. It turned out to be an article written by some CEO making other CEO’s not feel guilty about paying minimum wage. When I make 7.50 or 8 dollars an hour, cash rules everything around me. I am not working a job that I am concerned about anything other than the paycheck. People can’t live like that. It bothers me knowing that I have friends who work 50+ hours a week on minimum wage and can hardly keep a roof over their head and food on the table. Hard work is supposed to pay off right? I wonder when that is going to happen.
